A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
