Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
